Reverend Sturdy Harris was a civil rights activist who led of a group of Freedom Riders in 1961.

History

Sturdy Harris was a tall and strong man who once played football for Fisk University, and was an ordained minister (a reverend).

In 1961 Alabama, Sturdy Harris led a Freedom Rider bus to protest racial segregation of public transportation. Robert Freeman accidentally boarded their bus, but he had no intention of risking his life for their cause. However Sturdy kept forcing Robert to stay with them, insisting that it's God's will for him to help liberate the black race.

Freeman was forced to endure a dangerous road trip through the South, while angry mobs and local police used violence against the Riders in an attempt to preserve white power. Eventually Sturdy, Robert, and a fellow Rider named Diane Nash were arrested and spent some jail time together.

Personality

As a dedicated supporter of the civil rights struggle, Sturdy was okay with nonviolently resisting white supremacy, even if he risked getting killed for his beliefs. However he seemed to push his protesting to new levels, as he seemed to be a big risk taker and was drawn to dangerous situations. This led to Robert questioning Sturdy's sanity, and he even accused him of being a suicidal martyr wannabe.
